Smotherman inks future at Vernon

Certainly not the overriding reason for her choice to continue her volleyball career at the next level, Peaster senior Blair Smotherman was including all of the good reasons she chose Vernon College as her next step.

“[Vernon colors] are blue and white,” Smotherman listed, “just like I am, now [at Peaster].”

The setter was initially of the mind to head northerly, to North Central Texas College, but a visit to Vernon changed all that.

“I just fell in love with Vernon,” Smotherman said. “My tryout went very well and all of [my future teammates] seemed really nice.

“Like Peaster, Vernon is a small town atmosphere. They also just came off a very good season and I’m excited about being part of the team.”

Regardless of where she made her decision to play, Smotherman’s first love is the game itself — ‘everything about it,’ she states. When head coach Autumn Threet came to Peaster from Springtown two years ago, she piqued Blair’s interest in continuing her volleyball career.

“I hope to pursue a career in coaching volleyball,” the senior said. “Maybe I could come back here to Peaster and help coach Threet.”

Though Smotherman has tinkered with the idea of pursuing a line of work in the dental field, she really said her leanings were to coach.

Also a basketball player, Blair decided to forego the sport in her senior year so she could focus on volleyball.

The Ladyhounds’ district campaign resulted in a 12-2 record and a visit to the area round in postseason.

Smotherman is proud to have been part of a team that has shown a resurgence in Lady Hounds volleyball, and has positive vibes for the future of the program under Coach Threet, and has seen some of the up and coming talent, which may have helped stoke her prospective coaching desires.

“Peaster has a good group coming up through middle school,” she said. “I had the opportunity to coach some of them in the spring league.

“It’s just awesome when you are teaching them and they catch on and get really excited about learning the game.”

  • Summer athletic camps — July/August

    Staff Report

Summer athletic camps become a bit more “meaningful” in the late days of July and into  August, at least for some high school and middle school athletes.

In most cases, the youth football camps include grades 6 through 8, and though there is no contact involved, some of the instructors of he camp may be getting a preview of the talent coming their way in just a few short weeks.

Team volleyball camps, stretching from grades 4 through 12, provides a segway for many of the campers who will soon be entering workouts for the impending volleyball season.
