Performance of Handel’s ‘Messiah’ is Monday at WC

Weatherford Democrat

— Weatherford College’s rescheduled performance of G.F. Handel’s “Messiah” is set for Monday, Dec. 16.

This will be the 11th consecutive year WC has performed the musical masterpiece. The 47-voice Parker County Community Choir will perform selections from “Messiah” beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Alkek Fine Arts Center. Admission is free.

The performance was originally scheduled for Dec. 9 but was postponed because of last weekend’s ice storm.

WC’s Rob Laney will conduct the performance, which will include a string quartet, grand piano and piccolo trumpet.

“The choir and I decided to vary the program this year by including some of the most challenging choruses from the masterwork,” Laney said. “The songs, ‘His Yoke is Easy,’ musically speaking is anything but, and ‘He Shall Purify,’ when sung correctly, certainly will!”

The performance will culminate with the 271-year-old tradition of enjoying the “Hallelujah Chorus” amongst a standing audience.

Seating will be limited; doors will open at 7 p.m.

“It is the choir’s pleasure and mine to present this free concert to the community because we feel that in an over-commercialized season it’s important to give the gift of music during the holidays.”
