LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Shocking electric rate increases

Weatherford Democrat

— Shocking electric rate increases

Dear Editor,

I would like to bring something to the attention to all the residents in Weatherford who are at the mercy of the City of Weatherford Electric.

As a resident of Weatherford I have noticed since my January 2013 monthly statement that the rate was 8.25 cents per kilowatt-hour, but as we continued on through the months of 2013, it has hit the rate of 9.75 cents per kwh. This equates to an 18 percent jump in price. How much more will this rate rise this year?

Fortunately, I can absorb the increase, but how about the less fortunate? The City of Weatherford needs to take action on where they buy our electric from so they can lower the cost to all, before it is too late for all of us.

Thank you.

Timothy Fishkin, Weatherford

Editor’s note: According to the city, the rates are driven by the price of natural gas, which is up from a year ago. Officials say they try to average out increases to try and avoid passing on large rate increases to the consumer at one time. The city noted that two years ago the local rate was as low as 7.25 cents per kwh.

Paws to give thanks

Dear Editor,

To the city of Weatherford, Parker Paws thanks the people in Weatherford for their support and donations at our recent garage sale.

We will see you at Dogtoberfest on Saturday, Oct. 5.
