Piano students perform for TCU master teacher

The annual master class hosted by Weatherford Music Teachers was held April 6 at Grace First Presbyterian Church in Weatherford.

Six students performed for master teacher Harold Martina, of the TCU faculty.

Martina, pianist-in-residence at the School of Music of the Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, is an internationally acclaimed pianist and teacher. His early years of study in his native Curaçao, Netherlands Antilles, were supplemented by further work at the Fine Arts Institute of Medellin, Colombia, and at the Vienna Academy of Music, where he was awarded a prize by the Austrian Ministry of Culture.

In 1975, Queen Juliana of the Netherlands appointed him as a Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau for his outstanding contribution to music. Martina has performed as a soloist and appeared with orchestras in Europe, the United States of America, Latin America, Israel and Japan, with extraordinary acclaim by both audiences and critics.

In 2001 the College of Fine Arts of the University of Antioquia in Colombia named its music hall “Harold Martina Auditorium.”

World-renowned performers whom Mr. Martina has accompanied include violinists Eugene Fodor, Daniel Heifetz, Henryk Szeryng, Erick Friedman, and Ruggiero Ricci; cellists Christine Walevska, Leonard Rose, Pierre Fournier, Paul Tortelier, Andre Navarro, Antonio Janigro and Janos Starker; sopranos Maria Stader and Sheila Armstrong; flautist Gary Schocker; and bandoneonist Daniel Binelli.

Students who performed piano solos were Chloe Sonnier, Andrew Miller, Galina Novak, Kyra Caldwell, Kyle Wiggs and Grace Hough.

Their teachers include Emily Laney, Paul Andrews, Liz Wynne, Kathryn Hamilton and Holly Hughes.
