Weatherford ISD Board members have agreed to hire Ikard Assistant Principal Christy Burton as the school’s new principal following the retirement of current Ikard Principal Linda Starnes at the end of the school year.

Starnes has been with Weatherford ISD the past 41 years.

“We are excited to see Christy step into this position and continue the great work that Linda has done in leading this campus,” WISD Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Hanks said.

Burton and her husband, Michael, have two sons, Dylan, 17, and Hunter, 11.

“Educators teach children the importance of community and being good citizens,” Burton said. “I believe that the best way to accomplish this is to model it consistently. I am currently a board of trustee for the Millsap Independent School District and have served there for the last four years.

This opportunity helps me to ensure that education is a priority for students everywhere. It provides me another opportunity to do what I love, work with children, and make decisions that are in the best interest of the kids.”

Burton said she was thankful to have Starnes as mentor for the past 14 years.

“I started my career in WISD with Ms. Starnes at William B. Travis Elementary as a student teacher from 1999 to 2000,” she said. “I was hired to teach third grade in 2000-01, the last year that Travis was open.”

After that year the staff moved to Bose Ikard Elementary in 2002 where Burton continued teaching third and fourth grades. She became the assistant principal at Ikard in 2006.

“I look forward to continuing the academic expectations and culture at Ikard Elementary with our staff, students, families and community,” she said.
