Whiteman honored for work creating campus emergency crisis scenario

Weatherford Democrat

— Ben Whiteman, former Weatherford ISD Director of Safety and Security, was recognized for his work in creating a July 19 tabletop exercise dealing with a campus emergency scenario including members of the Weatherford Fire Department, Weatherford Police Department, Parker County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Department of Public Safety, emergency medical technicians, Certified Emergency Response Team, Red Cross, media and Weatherford ISD administrators, nurses  and counselors.

The purpose of the training exercise was to better prepare the campus and district crisis management teams and all first responders and support groups who may work together should an emergency incident occur on a WISD campus.

The goals of this training were to:

• Improve communication processes between the different agencies, as well as WISD, and have a better understanding of all the different components of NIMS (National Incident Management System) that will be utilized during an event.

• Identify materials and supplies needed during an event.

• Identify areas to target during drill practice that will improve emergency response time.

• Ensure key processes are in place, such as mitigation, response techniques, reunification, parent and citizen communication, media communication, recovery, etc.

Whiteman worked closely with WISD Executive Director of Safety and Transportation Grant Priess to create a scenario that was believable and well-developed.
