A Garner man convicted of sexually abusing a young child over the course of several years was sentenced Tuesday morning to 20 years in prison.
Originally indicted on a first-degree felony charge of continuous sexual abuse of a child, John Herring, 63, pleaded guilty in the 43rd District Court to aggravated sexual assault of a child for digitally penetrating the victim and indecency with a child for fondling the victim, according to Assistant District Attorney Jeff Swain.
Judge Craig Towson sentenced Herring to 20 years on each count and the sentences will run concurrently, Swain said.
Herring has been in the Parker County Jail since his arrest July 27 with bond set at $50,000.
Last July, the girl reportedly returned from Herring’s home crying. She reportedly told her mother and authorities that Herring often abused her over an approximately five-year period beginning when the victim was younger than 10 years of age.
