Rancher honored for family's 150 years in ag

BROCK — A local rancher and Weatherford Democrat columnist has been honored for 150 years of agricultural production  by the State of Texas.

Larry Jones, whose ranch is in the Lazy Bend area southwest of Brock, was recognized for his and his family’s work in agriculture during a Nov. 8 ceremony in Austin. Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples honored the Jones family, now 10 generations strong, and four other families for their long time contributions to farming and ranching in Texas. Several other families were honored for 100 years in Texas agriculture.

Jones said the entire ceremony, held at the Capitol Building, was “first class.” Jones and his wife took two of their grandchildren with them for the ceremony and were able to watch the ceremony from the gallery in the House of Representatives Chamber.

One of the highlights of the day for Jones was meeting Red Stegall.

“He was at the other end of the chamber, so I asked one of the aides if it would be OK to go over and meet him and get his autograph,” Jones said.  “They said they would go ask but by that time he was gone. A few minutes later, he came from the other side of the chamber, shook my hand and we got to talk for a few minutes. Just a tremendous individual and one of the nicest guys you will ever meet.”
