Former pizza restaurant owner accused of rape pleads to lesser charge

By CHRISTIN COYNE

A former Springtown restaurant owner accused of raping an employee pleaded guilty to a lesser crime and received six months of probation.

Avni “Tony” Muhametaj, owner of the former Tony’s Pizza and Pasta in Springtown, pleaded guilty last week to a class A misdemeanor charge of unlawful restraint.

Muhametaj, 56, was arrested in April 2012 on a charge of sexual assault after an employee told Springtown police he raped her while she was waiting for a ride home after other employees left for the night.

Muhametaj did not dispute that the two had sex but claimed it was consensual rather than coerced or forced, according to Parker County Assistant District Attorney Jeff Swain.

“It was, from our perspective, a very challenging case,” Swain said.

They had extensive discussion with the victim, who agreed to the plea offer, according to Swain.

“We all felt that it was the best way to handle the case,” Swain said.
