Real cowboys set to compete in Ranch Rodeo

Today’s parade, free Cherry Park concert kick off weekend’s events

This weekend’s Ninth Annual Parker County Sheriff’s Posse Ranch Rodeo kicks off this evening with a parade along South Main Street followed by a free public concert at Cherry Park.

Hands from 16 Texas ranches are competing in the three Ranch Rodeo performances, set for 7:30 p.m. Friday then 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday at PCSP Rodeo Arena, 2251 Mineral Wells Highway. Tickets are $10 for ages 11 and older while children under 10 are free. A concession stand will be open.

A Saturday ticket is good for all day and includes the Saturday night concert and dance featuring Jake Hooker & The Outsiders. Saturday night’s finale will involve competition among the top eight teams from the Friday and Saturday morning sessions. Tickets purchased after 9 p.m. Saturday are $15.

Also on Saturday is scheduled team roping at 10 a.m., a Calvary Riding Group performance at 4 p.m. and a Mounting Shooting Contest at 4:30 p.m. A chuck wagon dinner will be served beginning at 6 p.m. at a cost of $10 a plate.

A concert after Friday night’s events features the Texas Dangers Band.

The ranch hands will be competing for prizes in the events of saddle bronc riding, stray gathering, mutton busting,  trailer loading (separate events for men and women competitors), team doctoring and wild cow milking.

Teams entered are C3 Ranch, Addison Ranch, Creighton Ranch, B&S Cattle Co., H J Land & Cattle, Bonds Ranch, Parker County Cowboy Church, Heart L Ranch, Slate River Ranch, Nine Bar Cattle Co., Triple S Cattle Co., Veal Ranch, XL Ranch, Saunders Ranch, Young Ranch and 2 J Cattle Co.

A parade today begins at 6 p.m. at the Weatherford High School Ninth Grade Center and will travel north on South Main Street leading to the free concert at Cherry Park. Master of ceremonies for tonight’s concert is Judy James. Performing are Miss Devon and the Outlaw, named Western Music Association Harmony Duo Of The Year in 2012 and the 2013 Wrangler Award recipient; Stan Mahler, known as one of the best tenors in western and cowboy music; and Teresa Burleson, Academy of Western Artists and 2010 Cowgirl Poet of the year.
