MILLSAP MATTERS: Slovenskys receive first Millsap Recognized Yard of the Month honor

Weatherford Democrat

MILLSAP – As we move into some very warm, pretty weather people begin to work in their yards and make home improvements. As a result of such efforts the first Recognized Yard of Millsap has been selected.

Congratulations to Joe and Kris Slovensky on receiving this honor. Sponsored by the City of Millsap and the Neighborhood Ladies Home and Garden Club, a committee of three will choose a home/yard as the Recognized Yard each month May-December.

The criteria ranges from improvement to the property or home to the gardening/foliage of the land. In the case of the Slovenskys, of 508 Palo Pinto Street, the committee sighted that their yard was well landscaped with mature plantings and shrubs and all were well maintained. Thanks Joe and Kris for helping make Millsap a beautiful place to live.

Millsap ISD is pleased to announce a new secondary assistant principal for the 2013-14 school year.  Barbara Pitt has accepted the position of high school/middle school assistant principal. Ms. Pitt has worked for the last six years as an assistant principal in the Weatherford ISD, and prior to that she worked in the Fort Worth ISD. Her college credentials include a Bachelor of Science degree from Bowling Green University and a Master of Education from TCU. Welcome to Millsap ISD, Ms. Pitt!

Millsap Water Supply Corporation continues to make wonderful strides to give its customers the best quality of water. At the regular May meeting of the organization top priority items on the agenda included discussion of attendance to the yearly Texas Rural Water Association Training and Technical Conference which will be held July 17-18 in Galveston. Another big item on the schedule was discussion of attendance to the 2013 Public Drinking Water Conference, which will be held as a two day seminar in Austin. At this event the Texas Commission of Environmental Quality will give information on topics such as drinking water regulations, operations and new technology. Thanks Millsap Water Corp. for always doing a great job!

As the school year is finishing up many events are on the horizon for students. The high school athletic banquet will be held May 21 in the cafetorium at 6 p.m. All sports will be recognized as everyone enjoys a celebratory meal. Also, a reminder that the high school awards program will take place May 16 in the high school gym at 6 p.m. Scholarships, course awards, honor roll and perfect attendance recognitions will all be presented.

The School Agriculture Department is finishing the year out in some big ways, including recently conducting a plant sale. Middle school students worked throughout the year to grow a wide variety of plants that included hanging baskets, potted plants and gardening plants. To relax from a busy year of academics the FFA/Ag Department will have an ice cream social on May 17 at 6:30 p.m. Parents and students will attend with instructors Johnny Hook and Chris Goen making this a very special event for the department.

Millsap has suffered the loss of  longtime resident Lavangelene Weaver Shaw. Mrs. Shaw and her family were well known in the town and the passing of her husband, James, in 2002 saddened area friends. Condolences to Mrs. Shaw’s children Norma Rodriguez, Vickie Kincheloe, Christy Shaw, and James Shaw Jr., their families, and other family members.

Reminder: Walden’s Farm and Ranch Supply (201 Fairview, Millsap) will be celebrating its 10th anniversary on May 18, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., and invites everyone to come out for a great day of fun and prizes.
