Bringing awareness to child abuse

Members of the Parker County Child Protective Services Board worked Wednesday organizing materials they will distribute to children throughout the county next week promoting April as Child Abuse Awareness Month.

They hope the items – wrist bands for elementary school children, three-ring binder organizers, for junior high and high school students, sticky notes and brochures – will raise awareness about child abuse and perhaps lead to increased reporting of abuse or suspected abuse.

Through United Way and locally raised funds, the local CPS board purchased:

• 11,275 pencil bags for county students in grades 6-12.

• 12,750 wrist bracelets for students in grades kindergarten through fifth.

• Sticky notepads going to Millsap ISD students.

• 5,723 "Warning Signs of Abuse" pocket pals going to all school staff (front office, administrators, teachers) in Parker County as well as to parents in the county's highest child abuse reporting cities.
