With Veterans Day coming Sunday, Parker County Animal Shelter (WPCAS) has a special way of remembering veterans and their families with the new “Pets for Vets” program.
As a way to alleviate the ever-growing pet population, the shelter, located at 409 Hickory Lane, is offering a free pet with proof of military service Nov. 9 to 17. Interim Director Animal Services Dustin Deel said shelter staff will do their best to match veterans with the proper pet.
“While veterans can pick whatever animal, dog or cat, they want, we’re going to try and guide older veterans with older animals who deserve just as much love,” Deel said. “We just want to show our gratitude for all that veterans do.”
All adoptions will include spay or neutering, a microchip, rabies and all core vaccinations, Deel said. Veterans are asked to bring proof of their military service to receive their free animal.
“Animals give so much more than they require, so it’s WPCAS’s goal with this program to honor military veterans by pairing them with a shelter pet that best matches their personality,” Deel said. “It’s a win-win solution. Needy shelter pets receive a second chance at life while honoring our military veterans. The service provided by our veterans is priceless, as is the bond between humans and animals.”
Veterans are urged to come by the shelter during normal business hours which are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Friday. For information, call 817-598-4111.
