Staci Tharp, Weatherford High School AP English Language Arts teacher, and Nicole Comstock, AP Physics teacher at WHS, in June spent part of their summer assisting the College Board as AP exam readers.
Each June, AP teachers and college faculty members from around the world gather to evaluate and score the free-response sections of the AP exams. In addition to scoring the exams, being an AP reader gives teachers the opportunity to network and exchange ideas with other teachers.
One advantage for Weatherford ISD is that these teachers gain insight into AP scoring standards and gain valuable knowledge that can then help them help WISD students prepare for these exams.
This year, Comstock had the opportunity to grade the international exam, which was administered overseas and given at a different time than the test in the U.S.
There were approximately 7,000 exams to read and just seven readers – there by invitation only – grading the seven free response questions on exam. Each grader was assigned one question, therefore Comstock graded approximately 7,000 exams this year.
Tharp’s experience was a little different. She said her group studied one prompt which was calibrated on the scoring of that one essay.
This year Tharp scored the synthesis prompt – the documented researched argument. She has been a grader for three years, and has now scored each of the three types of essays on the exam. In total this year, she graded 1,825 AP exams.
