Parker County REACT Training Academy dates set

— The Weatherford Police Department, along with Freedom House and the Parker County Responding to Every Assault and Crisis Team (REACT), have teamed up to host the 2013 REACT training academy.

The academy is scheduled to begin Oct. 15 and will run through Nov. 26 with classes held Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Freedom House, located at 1149 Fort Worth Highway, and the Weatherford Police Department, 801 Santa Fe Drive.

Attendees will learn from law enforcement officers, firefighters, Freedom House, Parker County district and county attorney’s office representatives and many other local professionals. Class topics include:

• Victimization.

• Family violence.

• Crisis intervention.

• Child abuse.

• Mass disasters.

• Sexual assault.

• Suicide.

• Crime victims’ compensation.

• Stress management.

• Dealing with death/grief.

• Crime scene procedures.

Upon completion of the training, attendees will have the opportunity to join the Parker County Responding to Every Assault and Crisis Team. REACT volunteers have many avenues in which to give back to the community such as going on call-outs to help with victim needs and crisis intervention, volunteering at Freedom House, Parker County Attorney’s Office, Weatherford College Campus Police Department, and Weatherford Police Department.

Applicants must be at least 21 years old, a Parker County resident and have a clear criminal history. Training is free but class size is limited so register early to reserve your space.
