National Night Out, a chance for neighbors to get to know each other and learn about ways to protect their property from local law enforcement officials, is scheduled for Tuesday night.
Weatherford will have several small events around the city with city and police officials attending to spread the word. Events will include visits from Weatherford’s police officers, firefighters, McGruff the Crime Dog and members of the Citizen’s Police Academy Alumni Association. Many events are scheduled for residents of the neighborhoods themselves but there a couple open to the public.
Freedom House, 1149 Fort Worth Highway, is having an event from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with refreshments being served. A special visit from McGruff the Crime Dog is scheduled along with a bounce house. Whataburger on the south service road of I-20, is also having an event from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
A number of neighborhoods are having block parties, which are not open to the general public. Those areas are Weatherford Lake (east side), Lake Hills Addition, Westover Village Estates, Timber Creek Estates, Woodhaven Villas, Austin Heights Addition, W. Josephine, and Kelly View Estates.
Detective Beth Turnbow with Weatherford Police Department says it’s not too late for any area wishing to have an event to do so. Turnbow can be reached at 817-594-4419 for assistance in organizing an event.
According to a press release, National Night Out is designed to:
• Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness.
• Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime efforts.
• Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships.
• Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
