March local sales tax reports a mixed bag

FROM STAFF REPORTS

The City of Weatherford saw an 8 percent increase in sales tax collections received from the state comptroller’s office this month compared to March 2012.

However, the city’s sales tax receipts through the year’s first quarter are lagging slightly behind last year’s pace.

The City of Weatherford levies a 1.5-cent sales tax on taxable retail purchases. March’s sales tax rebates are based on taxable sales made in January within the city and reported to the state in February.

Various Parker County cities varied in their March sales tax collections. Several, including Annetta, Reno and Springtown, saw a decrease in their March disbursements compared to a year ago. Several cities, including Aledo, Cool and Willow Park, saw double-digit increases.

On the year, Parker County’s sales tax receipts are more than 3 percent below the same period last year.

Statewide, sales tax revenues were up 3.7 percent for the month.

“Sales tax revenues continue to grow, but at a more moderate pace compared to recent months,” Texas Comptroller Susan Combs said. “The latest increase was led by receipts from the construction and restaurant sectors. Collections from other major sectors such as oil and natural gas-related businesses and manufacturing remain at high levels.”
