Friends of the Weatherford Library had a successful year and celebrated it during an annual fundraiser luncheon Friday at the Doss Heritage and Culture Center.
Weatherford’s Director of Library Services Dale Fleeger said the friends raised more than $15,000 last year to help with such programs as the Summer Reading Program, which costs an average of $5,000 to run every year. Nearly $10,000 was spent on new shelving at the facility, Fleeger said.
“Friends are ambassadors of the community and inform the community of what we need,” Fleeger said. “They do a number of jobs for us and are an integral part of the library.”
Over the next year, friends of the library and other staff members will be speaking on the need to expand the present 17,000-square-foot facility on Charles Street. Fleeger said the facility has used up its available space and needs to expand to about 40,000 square feet.
Expansion has been key to the library since Fleeger took over nine years ago. The library now has downloadable books and is looking to add downloadable magazines with some grant monies later this year.
“The library belongs to the community,” Fleeger said. “Whatever we decided to build will be what the community wants and Weatherford deserves the best.”
The sold-out luncheon featured Texas humorist and storyteller Suzie Humphreys who told a number of stories about her career as a radio host, administrative assistant and actress. She said one thing she has learned in life is we tend to handle problems in our lives all wrong.
“Regardless of what the situation or the problem in the job or the relationship, it is not the problem that’s the problem,” Humphries said. “It’s the way we think about the problem that’s the problem.”
Humphries says keeping a positive attitude and knowing you can do something, even when you can’t, that will get you through life a happier person.
“Yes is always the start of something,” Humphries said. “Where will no get you? Nowhere.”
