Boppin’ and a rockin’: Auditions for musical Saturday

Weatherford College plans production of ‘Return to the Forbidden Planet’

— If you like the music of the 1950s and ‘60s and know most of it word for word, then you might be interested in being a part of director Nancy McVean’s musical at Weatherford College this fall.

Auditions are scheduled Sept. 7 for “Return to the Forbidden Planet,” a jukebox musical by playwright Bob Carlton.

Based on Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” and the 1950s science fiction film “Forbidden Planet,” (which itself was loosely based on “The Tempest”), the play takes place entirely on the bridge of a futuristic starship.

According to Joe Nicikowski, WC technical director, the play is campy “sci-fi consisting of silvered space suit costumes and spaceship sets. It’s like a five-layer cheesy take-off of all those ‘50s sci-fi movies. The dialogue is adapted from well-known passages from Shakespeare, but it’s funny dialogue, lots of puns, and lots of old-time rock ‘n roll music,” Nicikowski said.

Some of the musical numbers are “Wipe Out,” “Good Vibrations,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Born to be Wild,” “Shake Rattle and Roll,” “Gloria” and “Only the Lonely.” Several other well-known classics from the 1950s and ‘60s round out the music.

The auditions are scheduled 6-7 p.m. in the Alkek Fine Arts Center theatre. For more information, contact McVean at 817-598-6307.
