First Mondays changing dates this November

By BRIAN SMITH

For the first time ever, First Monday will have its dates changed.

Recreation Coordinator-First Monday Karen King told members of the Parks and Rec Board during a Tuesday meeting the original dates for First Monday in December fall during Thanksgiving weekend. A survey of vendors and staff set the stage for moving the event to the weekend of Nov. 22-24, the weekend before Thanksgiving.

King said that while First Monday has been closed before due to an ice storm, this is the first time the date itself has been changed. King said a similar situation in 2014 could force another date change as well.

In a related item, Parks and Recreation Director Danielle Felts gave an update on Heritage Park, where the monthly event is held. She said the work on the middle parking area is nearly complete, except for a ribbon curb to be set on the east side of the lot, which is expected to be completed before the next First Monday event Nov. 1-3.

She said the improvements to Heritage Park have been exciting and further improvements should continue to bring additional events to the park.

“We need to program the grounds for the rest of the year other than the 35 days First Monday is going on,” Felts said.

Felts said the city has budgeted $500,000 for Heritage Park improvements. Once work on the First Monday vendor and RV parking lot is complete, work on other improvements will begin, she said.
