MILLSAP MATTERS: Elementary school playground additions

By SHARRON HUDSON

MILLSAP – With the kids going back to school there is much news on that front. One wonderful improvement at Millsap Elementary is on the playground area.

As you look toward the playground there appears to be a giant blue awning. This is the new shade structure to protect the students and staff from dangerous sun rays. Funding for this much needed addition came through a grant from the American Academy of Dermatology and a donation from the Millsap Elementary PTO. The maintenance department did a great job of managing the construction of the very large structure. May the teachers and kids enjoy this health protection and the coolness it brings.

Some other big school news is that the Millsap Alma Mater will have a new melody at the start of this school year. The process, which culminated in the new tune, started in 2012 when some students asked if the song could be reviewed for a possible change in the music. A committee was formed by the school board and, after many steps were taken by the committee, two composers were contacted.

Although there have been three known versions of the school song throughout the history of the school each one had different lyrics. This time the goal was to keep the same lyrics, but change the tune. When this goal was reached by the composers, members of the student body voted to change to the new version and the school board did the same. We are looking forward to hearing the new music during the coming school year.

Our neighbors at the Cool City Council want the public to know that they are wrapping up everything about the water grant which resulted in a great upgrade to their area water system. The installation, which took place over many months, is finalized and the council thanks everyone for their cooperation during the work phases and hope that no one was inconvenienced. They also are very appreciative of North Rural Water Supply Corporation, which was their partner in the project. A job well done and worth waiting for!
