Candidates, propositions await fates

Polls across county open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday

With more than 6,000 ballots already cast around the county, Saturday is the last day for registered voters to exercise their rights in helping determine the outcomes of a slate of county-wide contested city council and school board races as well as four propositions.

Fourteen polling sites across the county will be open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for registered voters eligible to participate.

The result most eyes will focus on is that of the proposed $107.32 million Weatherford ISD bond package to pay for a variety of listed capital improvement projects including construction of a ninth grade wing at the high school, a new Career and Technology Center, security and technology enhancements and additions and upgrades to athletics facilities.

WISD is not the only school district with a bond proposal before voters. Peaster ISD is asking its voters to OK a proposed $3 million capital improvements bond while Brock ISD voters will decide a proposed $3.495 million bond package.

Another election of high interest is the outcome of the proposed Emergency Services District No. 1 annexation of the Aledo fire district. The Aledo Volunteer Fire Department is fully behind the annexation based on what the ESD has promised to deliver in terms of equipment, coverage and representation. However, six areas mayors have openly opposed the annexation.

The annexation proposal has two questions. Only qualified voters in ESD No. 1 and the proposed Aledo fire district area are eligible to cast ballots, and a majority in both must approve the proposed annexation and a second question related to accepting the district’s debt for the measure to succeed.

There are a number of contested city council and school board races. All three of Weatherford ISD’s board member whose terms are up this cycle are opposed. Place 3 incumbent Ashley Duncan Conlon faces challengers Philip Newkirk and Randy Hynes. Place 4 incumbent Gail Wirtanen is being challenged by Jeromy Puckett, and Place 5 incumbent Charlie Martinez faces a challenge from Joshua Tarbay.
