TV offers

Dear Editor,

Have you seen those TV offers where they give a price for one product and then offer a second like items for-free? All you have to do is pay a separate shipping and handling charge for the “free” items.

One such offer is for an induction cookware hot plate and a free set of steel pots and pans. And of course a second free hot plate is included. My first question is why would anyone want a second hot plate and is it really free?

The TV offer states the cost for the two hot plates and cooking utensils is $99.98, plus shipping and handling. There is no mention that the total charge will be $190 on your credit card, when the three $29.95 handling and shipping fees are added to the originally advertised price; one $29.95 charge for each hot plate and one for the free pots and pans. Television is full of similar buy one get one free offers.

I would recommend not buying anything from TV offers. But if you see something you must have, use one of the major internet catalog stores, which state total cost of products, including shipping and handling.

Otherwise let the buyer beware.

Mid-term elections are important

Dear Editor,

We are now roughly seven months away from the 2014 mid-term elections for members of Congress and for one U.S. senator in Texas. The mid-term national elections are of greater consequence than some may believe. Over the past five years, there are important measures of our economy that have worsened, and it has been dramatic.

The poverty rate is 20 percent higher than it was in 2008. The labor force participation rate has declined by nearly 7 percent. Median household incomes have dropped by almost 6 percent. On top of all that, Obamacare is now in force and those taxes for those that don’t sign up on the exchange or for a qualifying plan kick in on this year’s income.

The City of Weatherford is considering an ordinance that would ban smoking inside restaurants and enclosed areas where food is prepared, sold or consumed. Do you agree with this proposal?
