Grand jury indictments for April returned

A Parker County grand jury on Thursday indicted a man accused of breaking into his neighbor’s home and threatening him with a BB gun before engaging in a brief standoff with deputies.

Douglas Wayne Dowis, 53, was indicted on charges of burglary of a habitation intending other felony and burglary of a habitation.

Shortly before 8 p.m. March 12, the Parker County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a 34-year-old man who reported an apparently drunk Dowis had pulled a gun on him in the 300 block of Beaver Creek Drive and when he went inside and dialed 911, Dowis broke into the man’s house and threatened to shoot him if he didn’t hang up the phone.

Responding deputies found Dowis in his own driveway near his residence, a fifth-wheel travel trailer, according to the sheriff’s office. Dowis allegedly pointed the gun at law enforcement and told them to back off before re-entering his own residence.

After authorities made several attempts to make contact with Dowis, who they believed to be barricaded inside the travel trailer, deputies reportedly saw Dowis walking through his back yard.

Dowis obeyed commands to put his hands above his head and get down on his knees and was taken in to custody, according to the sheriff’s office, which reported that a BB gun similar in structure to a Barretta handgun was dropped by Dowis near where he was taken into custody.

Chase charges

The Parker County grand jury also indicted a woman who Weatherford police say led them in a high-speed pursuit through south Weatherford on Feb. 28.

Abby Nicole Helmuth, 20, was indicted on charges of evading arrest or detention with a vehicle and unauthorized use of a vehicle.

According to Weatherford police, officers responding to a report of a possibly stolen vehicle located at a business in the 100 block of Interstate 20 found a vehicle with two people inside and approached it when the car reportedly took off.

Something was thrown from the vehicle during the pursuit, according to police, who said it was later found and contained drugs and drug paraphernalia.
