ME: Man involved in standoff hung himself

By CHRISTIN COYNE

The medical examiner has ruled that the death of a man found dead following a standoff with police on Jan. 4 was a suicide.

John Cody Etheredge, 29, died of asphyxiation as a result of hanging, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The three-hour incident in the 100 block of West Fourth Street began when officers attempted to serve a felony arrest warrant for assault family violence on the man at his residence around noon.

The Weatherford-Parker County Special Operations Group was called after police officials said Etheredge barricaded himself in the house.

After shooting tear gas into the house, officers entered the home and found Etheredge’s body.

Investigators had reportedly spoken with Etheredge, who had prior assault family violence convictions, the day before the incident about an alleged assault that occurred earlier that week.

A woman reportedly had some significant injuries, though they were not life-threatening, Weatherford Police Sgt. Wendy Field said.

After investigators talked with Etheredge, police later responded to the same residence around 9 p.m. Jan. 3 regarding a possible suicide call involving Etheredge that was made by a third party, Field confirmed. However, Etheredge told officers that everything was OK, she said.
