An 11-year-old boy was transported to Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth by Air Evac Thursday afternoon after he reportedly rode a bicycle in front of a vehicle.
Weatherford police believe the child was crossing the street in the 1500 block of South Main Street when he was broadsided by a southbound 2007 Jeep SUV in the outside lane of travel.
Investigators believe the boy saw a break in northbound traffic and stopped traffic in the inside southbound lane and assumed the outside southbound lane traffic was also stopped, according to Lt. Chris Crawford.
The boy was reported to be returning from Braum’s to Autozone, where his mother works, when the incident occurred in the construction zone.
Officers took pictures and interviewed witnesses at the scene, where a green child’s bicycle, a red baseball cap and a shoe lay directly in front of the stopped SUV.
He was transported by air ambulance with a possible head injury, though his condition was not known Thursday evening.
“Right now, of course, our thoughts are with this young boy,” Crawford said, adding that they do not believe there was any fault on the part of the 37-year-old female driver.
According to witnesses, the boy pulled right out in front of her, Crawford said.
The names of those involved were not immediately released as police were still conducting an investigation Thursday evening.
