Early voting numbers up

More than 6,000 ballots cast county-wide ahead of Saturday’s elections

By JUDY SHERIDAN

Totals from early voting, which closed Tuesday, show that 6,064 voters have already cast their ballots in the May 2013 general election, which concludes on Election Day this Saturday.

That is about double the number of early votes cast in the May 2012 local races – but there was no Weatherford ISD bond election last year. The $107.32 million capital improvements proposal by the district this year has no doubt attracted more early voters, with 3,769 ballots cast already in the WISD elections that include three contested board seats.

In the proposed Emergency Services District No. 1/Aledo VFD annexation, 763 votes have been cast within ESD No. 1 boundaries and 490 within the proposed annexation area.

Other vote totals show 174 cast in the City of Annetta; 21 in the City of Azle; 136 in Azle ISD; 692 in Brock ISD; 71 in Millsap ISD; 123 in Peaster ISD, 34 in the City of Reno; 229 in the City of Springtown; 633 in Springtown ISD; and 209 in the City of Willow Park.

Parker County Elections Administrator Robert Parten said the turnout has been good throughout Parker County, with the greatest number of voters showing up Monday and Tuesday of this week.

In May 2012, 3,095 voters cast early ballots, he said, most of the 4,721 total.

Tuesday ended the early-voting period that began April 29.

“I expect to still see people vote with enthusiasm on Election Day,” Parten said. “It wouldn’t surprise me to see an additional 4,000 people vote; it could be close to 10,000 votes by the end of Election Day.”

Parten said the WISD and Weatherford College elections have brought people out to vote in this election.

He compared last year’s early voting totals to this year’s by subtracting the 757 early votes cast in 2012 City of Weatherford elections from the 3,095 early vote total for a difference of 2,338 votes.

Then he subtracted the 3,769 early votes cast in WISD elections this year from the 6,064 early vote total for a similar 2,295 difference.

“It’s very comparable,” he said. “We’ve only got 40- something votes difference in the entire county in this election when you take out the City of Weatherford in 2012 and the WISD in 2013.”
