Authorities pronounced two drivers dead after witnesses said a woman traveling eastbound on the westbound side of Fort Worth Highway Thursday afternoon died when the car she was driving struck an oncoming pickup head-on.
The wreck occured around 3:45 p.m. Thurday near the intersection of Otto Drive. Killed were Carolyn Flottman, 66, of Weatherford, and Olivo Barrientos-Barrientos, 39, of Weatherford.
A woman who identified herself as Kristi said she was leaving work and traveling westbound on the highway when she saw an eastbound white car, driven by Flottman, cross into westbound traffic near the intersection of FM Road 730.
Flottman was driving “perfectly straight” in the inside westbound lane, Kristi said, adding that she moved over and the car passed her.
She thought the woman was trying to run her off the road, Kristi said, adding that she saw the collision in her rearview mirror.
“If I was not paying attention I would have been that truck,” she said.
Eric Ford, who was traveling westbound behind the collision, said the eastbound car suddenly veered from the inside lane and into the westbound truck ahead of him.
Ford wondered if Flottman might have had a medical condition.
“She was going pretty fast,” Ford said.
Cliff Tooley, who was driving eastbound, said he saw what appeared to be an explosion, with parts of the vehicles traveling 25 to 30 feet in the air, and the vehicles spinning several times before they came to rest in the westbound lanes.
“I’ve never seen such a bad accident,” Tooley, a former ambulance driver, said.
There were no other occupants in the car or truck, according to police.
During the westbound rush hour time, several emergency response agencies, including ESD No. 3, helped direct traffic at the scene as the Weatherford Police Advanced Accident Team investigated the wreck into the evening.
