Members of the Parker County Heritage Society on Thursday morning marked official recognition of the 1889 Pressler Map by the State of Texas Land Commissioner’s Office. The map plots the county’s land ownership, some 33 years after the county was formed in 1856.
In 2002 the Society participated in the Texas Land Commissioner’s Save-A-Map Program and sponsored the restoration of the Parker County September 1889 Pressler Map. A copy of the map was presented to the Society. The map is currently on display in the main first floor corridor of the historic Parker County Courthouse.
Since 1976 the Parker County Heritage Society has offered membership to those people who are interested in helping the non-profit organization fulfill two objectives; to preserve and document historic buildings and sites in Parker County and to promote the preservation of records which document the history and heritage of Parker County.
The major fundraiser for the Society, the Candlelight Tour of Homes, is scheduled for Dec. 14. Proceeds from past tours have been dedicated to worthy community projects for Chandor Gardens, Old City Greenwood Cemetery, the Doss Heritage and Culture Center, the Parker County Courthouse, the Pythian Home, the Weatherford Chamber of Commerce and the Weatherford Public Library.
