PASTOR POPHIN: Birth announcements

Second in a series of weekly December articles.

By PASTOR TOMMY POPHIN

The announcement of the birth of a child is a joyous occasion. In our day, the announcement begins with phone calls and text messages to family and friends announcing, “It’s a boy!” or “It’s a girl!” Such questions are asked: “What time did the baby arrive?” and “How much does he weigh?”

All of the vital information is shared and usually followed up with in the form of a post card announcement that includes several cute baby pictures. There is only one word that defines the moment: JOY!

During this Advent season, one of the favorite carols sung among Christians and in churches everywhere is “Joy to the World, the Lord has come, let earth receive her King!” This celebration of joy is in contrast to what many of us sense in our daily lives. We are overwhelmed by the problems and worries that rob us of the joys we might experience in life.

But then, for the Christian, we have living within us, the ongoing birth announcement of a child who was, is, and is to come, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. We find in Isaiah 9:6, the announcement of the birth of this King, even before it actually happened. It says, “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (NKJV)

Jesus is Wonderful in that, when you know Him, you are fully amazed by His love and care for you. He is the only true Counselor in that, He is the only one who has the right answer for you. He is the Mighty God in that, He created you, has judged your sin, and has then forgiven and defends you against Satan’s fiery attacks. (Eph. 6:16)
