People skills 101

Friends of the Library event speaker Hitzges tries to bring the best out of people

Motivational speaker Vicki Hitzges told a crowd of more than 250 people attending Friday’s 28th Annual Spring Luncheon hosted by Friends of the Weatherford Public Library how to better their interpersonal skills.

Hitzges said 85 percent of success has nothing to do with a person’s ability to do the job, but rather in how they interact with others.

“The reason people got their job, keep their job and move ahead in their career has to do with their people skills, not their technical skills,” Hitzges said during the event at the Doss Culture and Heritage Center.

Hitzges used items from her first book, “Attitude is Everything — 10 Rules for Staying Positive,” to illustrate how to hone one’s people skills. Part of that comes from the adage, “You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.”

“I have no idea why you would want to catch flies,” Hitzges said with a laugh. “But it’s been shown time and time again that people are more willing to work with a kind person than someone who is being hostile.”

Hitzges used her expressive personality to make her points throughout her 45-minute talk, including the message of people reaching out to people who reach out themselves.

“When you smile, do people smile back? When you are kind, are people kind back?” Hitzges said.

Realizing that not everyone has an effervescent personality, Hitzges said there are steps for becoming a go-getter:

• Greeting people, not meeting people. She said genuinely smiling at others, having a firm but not overpowering handshake and truly listening to what people are telling you are great ways to show you care.

• Listening to people. Hitzges used an exercise where people moved among tables and told their tablemates about the lunch they just ate. She said the exercise proved a point on how we don’t listen to people who are trying to make a point.
