LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Showing respect

Showing respect

Dear Editor,

My sister Robbie Benton’s funeral was Friday afternoon at White’s Funeral Home. The gravesite was outside of Mineral Wells. The respect shown by the good folks of Parker County and the surrounding area was overwhelming. I would say at least 90 percent of drivers pulled over in respect of the loss of life.

We are thankful and appreciate the good folks in the Weatherford area.

The opposite of love is not hate; it’s self!

Dear Editor,

I think this is one of the truest statements I have ever heard. I am slowly learning that in order to love someone properly, I have to be completely willing to sacrifice my needs and wants in order to fulfill theirs.

Loving someone is putting your desires on hold to show them that theirs matter. People nowadays are so stinking selfish with their time, their money, their energy and pretty much anything they have. It is so hard, and not human nature, to put aside those things or to use them to please someone else.

I think the problem arises when we get in the false mindset of saying those things belong to us. All the things we have were given to us by God, and we are called to use them in ways that glorify Him. I can guarantee pleasing yourself with your time, your money, and your possessions is NOT what God intended when He gave you them.

Strong relationships are forged when we are willing to die to self and put the needs and wishes of others ahead of our own. Marriage provides us with those daily opportunities to die to our own rights and to learn the character of Christ. The conflicts that the enemy intends to use to bring about our destruction can actually serve as motivations for us to grow to new depths in our Christian life. All the problems in the world today are the result of selfishness. The problems in our governments and with our economies are all the result of selfishness. The problems in our families are the result of selfishness.
