Initial payment to be made on Hagman statue


Work on the Larry Hagman Memorial Statue looks to be starting up.

More than a year after a committee decided they wished to do something to honor the Weatherford High School graduate, TV actor and son of famous Broadway star and Weatherford native Mary Martin, funds for the statue are on the increase, so much so that a check is expected to be cut in the near future for the sculpting work on the statue.

Local artist and sculptor Kelly Graham will be doing the work on the statue, spokesperson for the Hagman Memorial Committee Sherry Watters said.

The initial $35,000 check is part of the contract with the other $35,000 being paid upon installation at the Doss Heritage and Culture Center.

“We’re just so pleased that this is taking place,” Watters said. “Larry’s daughter contacted me last week and was asking how things were progressing with the statue.”

Installation is expected sometime around Thanksgiving with work on the bronze statue expected to take around six months. Hagman passed away Nov. 23, 2012.

Enough funds have been raised to pay for the making of the statue, committee members say. Donations to cover other costs, such as installation, are still being taken at First Financial Bank of Weatherford in person by calling 817-598-2500 and asking to put funds in the "Hagman Memorial" account.
