MILLSAP – Thanks to an unlikely pairing – the Millsap Parent-Teacher Organization and a Weatherford dermatologist – Millsap Elementary students will enjoy playing in the shade this year.

The school’s playground equipment is covered with a massive shade structure. The new structure will offer students and staff an estimated 97 percent protection from dangerous ultraviolet light rays.

Millsap Elementary School Principal Cathy Bradshaw extended thanks to Dr. Elaine Miller, D.O., of the Dermatology Associates of Parker County, for sponsoring efforts to acquire an $8,000 Shade Structure Grant from the American Academy of Dermatology. Bradshaw also extends her appreciation to the Millsap PTO for funding the remaining cost of the structure.

“The shade structure will help make our playground safer and more comfortable for our students during the hot months of the year,” said the principal. “Excessive exposure to the sun can be a real health concern and this new structure will help our children and staff members enjoy the playground while being more comfortable and safe.”

Millsap ISD Supt. David Belding noted that completion of the structure is just one of the many activities that show the commitment of community partners and school staff to reach the district’s vision “to partner with parents to be the premier educational organization.”

Millsap ISD will hold a dedication ceremony at 10 a.m. on Sept. 10. The public is invited to come and hear Dr. Miller present information on skin cancer statistics for the area and provide prevention tips.
