32nd Annual Candlelight Tour of Homes set for Dec. 14

The 32nd Annual Candlelight Tour of Homes will be held in Weatherford on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

This festive event is sponsored by the Parker County Heritage Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the buildings, sites, and documents that provide the “uniqueness of place” for Parker County.

Eight homes and venues will be featured on this year’s tour, and they may be visited in any order. Volunteer docents, some of whom will be elegantly attired in period clothing, will inform and entertain visitors at each location. Many of this year’s stops on the tour have never been featured before, or have not been on the tour in many years.

Join your friends on a guided tour of the Parker County Courthouse, given by County Judge Mark Riley, who was intimately involved with the courthouse’s restoration 10 years ago.

Visit the Lewis House at 904 S. Main St., a gorgeous Queen Anne Victorian with soaring tin ceilings and still-functional pocket doors.

The beautiful boyhood home of former Speaker of the House Jim Wright Jr., who was also the mayor of Weatherford from 1950-54, will make its debut on the tour this year, and visitors can take in the Texas Historical Marker dedicated at this home on Dec. 5.

Be awestruck by the beauty of All Saints’ Anglican Church at 125 S. Waco St., and hear about its many famous visitors through the years.

Two private homes, the Altfather House, at 410 W. Spring St., and the Brevard House, at 212 S. Alamo St., are both owned by young couples drawn to Weatherford within the past several years and will charm you with their lovely features as well as the stories of previous owners, noteworthy events and some furnishings passed from owner to owner through the years.

Be sure to allow plenty of time to take in the full beauty of the famous Chandor Home and Gardens at 711 W. Lee Ave., and browse the exhibits at the Doss Heritage and Culture Center, 1400 Texas Drive. The Doss Center will have a special expanded exhibit honoring the 100th birthday of famous actress and Weatherford native, Mary Martin.
