Healthy Women in Body and Spirit

By SALLY SEXTON

A crowd of mostly women, with a few men scattered throughout, filled the parking lot of Southwest Ford Tuesday evening to attend the Sixth Annual Healthy Woman celebration.

Visitors had a chance to visit more than 20 booths, hosted by different vendors, while enjoying a snack of cheese and crackers or a complimentary glass of champagne.

Afterward, ticket-holders headed inside to enjoy music provided by Strings 4 All Seasons and beef and chicken dishes catered by AJ’s Catering.

Following dinner, guest speaker Kelly Swanson, an author, motivational speaker and comedian, addressed the crowd, drawing laughs as she told her story of undergoing obstacles and coming out learning to be happy with herself.

“What does that voice tell you when you look in the mirror?” Swanson asked. “Does it say that you’re beautiful? Or does it say ‘Yes, your butt does look big in those jeans.’”

Swanson said that life isn’t really about looking like a princess but feeling like one, and listed three ways to do that — see the life you want and how your health factors into reaching your dreams, believe in yourself and know that you are braver than you think and do what it takes to reach your dreams, knowing that it is OK to put yourself first.

“No matter what pothole you are stuck in, you need to believe in yourself,” she said. “Be proactive. Don’t learn the hard way or wait until it is too late.”
