LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Enjoying his place in time

Dear Editor,

Larry Jones’ columns on Sunday are always amusing and informative, as was his book, “Now Hear This,” published several years ago.

His recent article, “Growing Old Is Not Much Fun?” (note the question mark) particularly got my attention, since I am well into the octogenarian category. When I was a youngster in the 1930s and ‘40s, I pitied older folks of my grandparents’ age because they were unable to get around so well and do things that we children liked to do. In retrospect, little did I understand that their limited mobility, lifestyles and desires suited them just fine – that, actually, they were usually comfortable in doing as they wished and, many years since, that is just where I find myself now.

Actually, when I consider the current situation of our society, “the shoe is on the other foot,” (a common saying of previous generations) I now find myself pitying the young folks of today who have no choice but to grow up in a morally degenerate society rife with devastating social ills – including alcohol- and drug-abuse, and shameless liberal moral decay where “anything goes,” as is daily reported by the news media.

Additionally, with a rapidly accelerating growth in population, the question comes to mind: Will there be enough production to supply the expanding demand?

This may all be just the negative thoughts of an “old fogey,” but it all makes me comfortable with my “place in time.”

Sincerely,

Doyle Marshall, Aledo
