WCS receives $250K gift for new ed facility

Weatherford Christian School’s Head of School Courtney McKeown announced Thursday night the school has received a $250,000 anonymous gift to go toward construction of a new educational wing that will house students in grades four through eight beginning in the fall of 2014.

The announcement came during the school’s annual Festival of Praise dinner, attended by more than 300 faculty and children inside the Greg Welch gymnasium, located at 2300 Ranger Highway. The pre-holiday event is a dinner and fellowship to give thanks for the blessings they receive daily at the local Christian school.

The evening included a large pot luck dinner where all the meat was provided by the WCS board of directors with side dishes and desserts brought by parents and staff. Hometown favorite Katy Keenie entertained guests with her musical talents and beautiful voice and families were given open mic time to tell their personal testimonies of how WCS has impacted them as a family.

The new wing will include 10 classrooms, four bathrooms, a cafeteria and infrastructure for a second floor. The project is expected to break ground in late December and be completed in late spring of 2014. Total completion for the project is $366,000 and the development department has already begun working with other donors to secure the $116,000 difference that will enable the school to build additional classrooms within the space for educational growth and expansion.

“We feel so truly blessed by this gift and the faith that it shows this donor has in what we are trying to accomplish at WCS,” said McKeown. “We have had a 35 percent increase in students this year in grades pre-K through 12th and we expect the same if not more for the 2014-15 school year, and we want to be prepared for that type of growth in the future without sacrificing our small class ratios and top-notch Christian education.”
