New blooms

Maegan Dando wanted to give Remembrance Flower Shop a new look when she took over as owner three weeks ago.

The shop, which had been open since 1946, had fallen into disrepair in recent years. The Weatherford native, who owns the shop with her husband, Damian, spent 10 years as floral manager at Winn-Dixie in town and another 12 years as lead designer at Central Market and another year decorating at the Gaylord Texan Hotel. In between all that, she was decorating a number of homes in the Southlake area, the smallest being 7,000 square-foot, Dando said.

The idea for taking over the shop came from a family friend who recommended Dando open her own shop. She began working at Remembrance two days a week around Valentine’s Day and saw some changes needed to be made. Using a customer service background that she has had since she was 16, she went right to work trying to turn things around.

“There were no flowers in the cooler,” Dando said. “Customers were coming in asking for something and being told it couldn’t be done. I leapt over the counter and asked what I could do. I’ve never wanted to tell anyone no. It’s just not in my nature.”

That was proven over the Memorial Day weekend. While at her daughter’s birthday party, a customer desperately in need of a floral arrangement for a funeral called her cell number asking for assistance. While the party was going on, Dando ran over to the shop and put together an arrangement for the customer, who praised her work and diligence in the shop’s Facebook page.

“I missed my daughter opening her gifts, but it was something that needed to be done,” Dando said. “I want to be able to bring the shop alive and show a sense of community and just let people know that we’re here and we’re ready to work."

Foot traffic had slowed at the shop for a time because of the atmosphere there but has begun to pick back up, still being “hit or miss” depending on the day. Dando says the store will slowly undergo a transformation with the hope of bringing a new vibe in.

“We want to provide a new twist on floral design and try some different things that people haven’t considered,” Dando said.

The shop not only offers beautiful designs by Dando, Samantha Richmon, and Ashley Kennedy, but silk flower arrangements, regular plants, wreaths, gift baskets and a number of crosses for any special (or non-special) event. While some shop renovations have been done, others are still necessary, including replacing the floor.

“We have changed our logo already and are looking forward to doing some other renovations when we get some money,” Dando said.
