Registration beginning for Cherry Park swim classes

WEATHERFORD — With the heat setting in, Weatherford residents will have an exclusive opportunity to register early for Learn to Swim and Weatherford Swim Team classes.

Registration is today from 6 to 8 p.m. for city residents at the Harberger Hill Community Building, 701 Narrow St. Proof of residency in the form of a City of Weatherford utility bill and valid driver’s license are required.

General registration will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Harberger Hill, and is open to both residents and non-residents.

“Our swim sessions usually go very fast, and most all of the session fill up for the whole summer,” Danielle Felts, director of communication and recreation for the City of Weatherford, said. “Parents like the “A” or “B” sessions for the kiddos because they can start the summer with swimming lessons and go from there on vacations.

“Those are the two sessions that fill up the fastest.”

The Learn to Swim program offers a total of four sessions, with classes for water-tots, preschoolers, elementary, adult beginner and stroke development.

Because of a high demand, participants may only register for one session, and registrants cannot register participants who do no reside in the same household.

“The number of spots is to be determined,” Felts said. “If you have less people sign up in a particular age group, we can make more spots in a different group to compensate.

“Until we see what the registration numbers actually are, it’s hard to determine.”

Swimmers will also get a sneak peek at pool renovations, as the pool has been full for the first time since it was drained at the end of last season.

“We filled the pool [last week] and we also cleaned it and gave it a fresh coat of paint,” Felts said. “We paint it every year before we fill it up.”

Registration continues from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at the recreation office at 119 Palo Pinto St., and will go through the week until all sessions are filled.

“We want the public to know that if parents cannot make it Friday or Saturday, they can come in to the office and register next week,” Felts said.
