Genealogical society dissolves after four decades

WEATHERFORD — After 41 years, the Parker County Genealogical Society is no longer sifting through decades-old records or reading through 100-year-old microfiche.

Those left of the 37 charter members decided a few months ago to disband after failing health decreased the group’s numbers and the lack of new, younger members joining the organization.

At its peek, the group boasted 50 to 60 members each meeting in local membership, along with numerous others outside the county and state looking for Parker County information, charter member Evelyn Broumley said. The club also published a quarterly journal, Trails West, for all their members.

“Some of us started this in our 30s and it became our interest,” she said. “A friend and I got started and joined the Daughters of the American Revolution and various organizations. But they’ve got me on the inactive list for the historical commission and DAR because of health problems.”

Broumley said membership began to decline in the ’80s, with only about six members showing up to their Tuesday night meetings at the Weatherford Public Library in recent years.
