It’s official. Coach Steve Wood has been named head football coach for Aledo High School, effective immediately. Wood has served as interim head football coach since July 31, 2014, when former head coach and Athletic Director Tim Buchanan became the district’s fulltime athletic director.
Wood had been an assistant coach and defensive coordinator for the Bearcats since 2002. He coached each of the Aledo High School teams that achieved State Championship titles in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013. The Bearcats were named AAAAA Division I State Champs Dec. 20, bringing home the state trophy for the fifth time in six years.
Before coming to Aledo ISD, Wood served as the defensive coordinator for Mesquite Poteet High School. He has also coached at Boswell, Dobie, and Calhounh high schools. His career spans 33 years.
Derek Citty, Aledo ISD superintendent, said, “With an amazing 49 to 45 win over the Temple Wildcats Saturday, Coach Wood has continued to prove his experience and coaching abilities are a winning combination for Aledo. I have complete confidence that his unrelenting spirit will positively impact the tradition of excellence in the Bearcat football program.”
