Back to school

The time has come for summer to end for Parker County students as school starts back up in the following August weeks.

Before then, students and their parents have a chance to get acclimated. All Parker County school districts have events designed to introduce parents and students to teachers before the school year begins.

“Meet the teacher events are a great introduction to a new school year,” Weatherford ISD Executive Director of Organizational Culture Charlotte LaGrone said. “These events help a child prepare for the first day of school by introducing them to their school and classroom and helps ease the first day of school jitters. It also provides parents a time to begin building relationships with teachers and school administrators, and to ask any questions they may have about the school day, school meals, volunteer opportunities, transportation, etc.”

For WISD elementary schools and middle schools, students and families are invited on campus to meet the teachers, visit their classrooms and drop off school supplies, LaGrone said. Sixth-grade students will also have the chance to tour the campus. Elementary Meet the Teacher Night is from 5:30-7 p.m. on Aug. 20, and the middle school event is from 5:30-7 p.m. on Aug. 19.

Weatherford High School and Ninth Grade Center students can pick up their schedules and find their classrooms from 3:30-6:30 p.m. on Aug. 20. Both campuses have meet-the-teacher events usually in September, LaGrone said.

In addition to meet the teacher events, some districts are offering a chance for families to visit with staff more socially. For example, Brock ISD is hosting a Meet and Greet Cookout for new families at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Brock High School.

“Campus principals, teachers and district administrators will be present to welcome these families to our community,” BISD Communications Director Natalie Parish said.

BISD’s Meet the Teacher Night takes place from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Aug. 13 at all campuses, Parish said.

Millsap Elementary is hosting Parent Block Party/Meet the Teacher from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday.

“Millsap Elementary School will be hosting festivities to welcome parents and students to the 2019-20 school year,” MISD Assistant Superintendent Edie Martin said. “This will be a time when families can meet their children’s teachers and enjoy an outdoor cookout, inflatables for children to play on, and each grade level will have their own ‘tailgate tent.’ Also included in the evening will be ‘Popsicles with Principals’ a time where families can meet the MES Principal Mrs. [Cathy] Bradshaw and Assistant Principal Dr. [Troy] Snyder.”

Also on Friday, the MISD community is invited to the annual Meet the Bulldog event from 7:30-8:30 p.m. at the Millsap High School gym. The event allows families to celebrate the start of the new school year, welcome new students who will be participating in fall events and meet coaches, Martin said.

Millsap middle and high schools have Meet the Teacher from 5-6:30 p.m. on Aug. 26, and elementary school Meet the Teacher will be from 6-7:30 p.m. on Aug. 27.

Peaster ISD’s meet the teacher event is from 5-7 p.m. Aug. 19 at all campuses, Communications Director Paul Casey said. The event allows parents to connect and build trust with teachers and can help ease the anxieties of new students, Casey said.

“Especially for a new student, it really kind of breaks down the anxieties of where to go so they can map their route, especially like new freshman, even though they just came from a campus that might not be 200 yards away, they’re not as familiar with it,” Casey said. “It’s really good on new and freshmen students to break the ice a little bit and go ahead and develop a path of where they’re going to be on the first day of school.”

Other meet the teacher events include:

Poolville Elementary’s “Stock the Classroom” from 2-6 p.m. on Aug. 12. Students can bring supplies, check class roster lists and visit with teachers, Elementary Principal Michael Thurman said.

Poolville Junior High will have a meet the teacher event from 2-6 p.m. on Aug. 12, according to the online calendar.

Poolville High School freshmen can attend orientation from 6-7 p.m. on Aug. 12, Principal Jennifer Shifflett said. Sophomores, juniors and seniors can pick up schedules from 4-6 p.m. on the same day.

Aledo ISD has meet the teacher events for all elementary schools and McAnally Intermediate School. For elementary families, the event will take place from 5-6:30 p.m. on Aug. 15 at all elementary campuses. For the intermediate campus, the event will take place from 5:30-7 p.m. Aug. 13.

Springtown High School is hosting Fish Camp for freshmen and new students from 10 a.m. to noon on Aug. 15 in the auditorium, according to the school’s website.

Meet the Teacher Night at Springtown Middle School is from 6-7:30 p.m. on Aug. 15. Reno Elementary’s meet the teacher is from 6-7 p.m. on the same day.
