In many instances stores are never a one-product stop. Clothing stores sell cosmetics, grocery stores stock up on toys and household items, and specialty shops always specialize in more than one thing, but very few of those shops have the ability to make all the products they offer compliment one another in unique and elegant ways.

Ann Jackson, owner of Ann’s Special Touch Antiques and Collectibles, has mastered just that skill. Her quaint, downtown shop, located on York Avenue, is a mix of old and new, elegant and fun.

Whimsy greets visitors at the door in the form of Mickey Mouse cookie jars smiling a wide grin, while the refined beauty of a porcelain tea set takes up its place in the window display.

Yankee Candle Company’s sweet, soothing scents linger in the air, while soft jazz music plays from a varying collection of musical CDs available for purchase.

Antiques mix with new products in the massive shop, which is much bigger than meets the eye. Fenton Glass and Heritage Lace are big sellers for Jackson and take up prime positions in the shop. Studio 56, a Christmas village collection also lines the walls and is kept in stock year-round for patrons eager to keep their prized collections growing.

“I try to keep all my items unique,” Jackson said. “The things I carry have a different emphasis than other shops.”

Jackson, who got the antique itch many years ago, opened her shop in 1997, after working in the industry for a number of years. She said she wanted to open a shop of her own, and after her stint working at another shop — it was just a natural progression.

“I have always liked antiques,” she said. “So, I just expanded my collection to fill out a store.”

Jackson’s daughter, Debra Greenway, helps out at the shop on occasion and said her mother’s flare for finding the unique and complimentary items is what separates Ann’s Special Touch from the others.

“I think the shop is different because we sell antiques, but we also sell things that go along with those antiques, like the Fenton Glass,” Greenway said. “All the items really cater to beautifying the home.”

Jackson said she truly enjoys meeting and greeting her customers everyday, it’s one of her favorite parts of owning and working the shop.

She said her plans for the future are to keep up the same customer service by continuing to offer up items which have the ability to make homes more beautiful, unique and fun.

“Meeting people and interacting with them, and helping them find the right item for their home is a great source of pride for me,” she said. “I plan to keep making my customers happy and maintaining a store people enjoy coming to.”
