House fire

It has been determined by Parker County Fire Marshal Kurt Harris that the cause of the fire that consumed the Leonard family’s home Thursday morning in Springtown was electrical, and now a neighbor of the family is doing what she can to get them back on their feet.

Harris said the cause was electrical and started somewhere in the kitchen, but has not yet determined what in that area started it.

Jeff and Sarah Leonard have six children — Katelyn, 13, Kayla, 12, Kristen, 11, Jack, 4, Eiley Rose, 2, and 6-week-old James.

“Since this tragedy happened so close to Christmas, it will be even harder on the kids,” Chelsea Ellis wrote on the GoFundMe page she created. “They could use any help you have to offer. Please give what you can to try to make this season a little better for this beautiful family.”

Ellis is accepting any kind of donations and monetary ones can be done by searching “Leonard Family lost their Home to Fire” at www.gofundme.com

“Sarah is in the burn unit. I’m told she is conscious,” according to the update Ellis put on the webpage. “James has been intubated and is being monitored. Jeff and Jack are on ventilators in the ICU. The home was not insured, so we really hope to meet the goal that has been set.”

The goal has been set at $100,000 and as of Friday morning, $8,662 had been raised so far.

“If you cannot give monetary donations, that’s OK. We are accepting anything you can give on behalf of the family,” Ellis posted. “We appreciate the outpouring of support from everyone and ask that you continue to pray for the Leonard family.”

Parker County sheriff’s deputies arrived on scene first of the house fire that was called in about 3 a.m. Thursday in the 200 block of Kalinga Drive in Springtown, northeast of Weatherford, and saw flames going through the roof of the home.

The deputies — Jeremy Tharp, Noe Murillo and Cpl. Steven Barnes — attempted rescue operations to remove small children inside the residence.

Parker County Emergency Services District 1, along with several other companies, also arrived on scene to help in the rescue of the family.
