A second grade teacher at Ikard Elementary School, Heather Holland, died Sunday after being hospitalized with flu-like symptoms, Weatherford Independent School District officials confirmed Monday.
Holland was the mother of two children, a 10-year-old daughter and a seven-year-old son.
Holland started feeling ill a week ago and went to the doctor on Wednesday, her husband, Frank Holland, told the NBC 5 Dallas/Fort Worth television station.
She was diagnosed with the flu and given a prescription for TamiFlu, which she started taking Thursday, he said.
Her condition worsened and she checked into Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Southwest Fort Worth late Friday, her husband told the television station.
Holland died after she went into septic shock, he said.
Counselors are the school campus today and will be throughout the week.
"Our campus custodians have been deep cleaning our schools since December and the campus where the teacher worked underwent another deep cleaning on Friday, Feb. 2," Weatherford ISD said in a statement.
Perrin-Whitt CISD in northwest Parker County was closed Monday to disinfect classrooms and buildings due to a high number of student and teacher absences.
