The Aledo Bearcats’ defense racked up five turnovers against the Everman Bulldogs Friday night on the road, as the former rolled to a 42-13 District 5-5A, D-II win.
That defensive effort, coupled with a 21-0 run by the Bearcats in the second quarter (the team scored one touchdown in the first frame) put Aledo (3-1, 2-0), comfortably in front, 28-0 heading into halftime.
Bearcats’ Head Coach Tim Buchanan praised his team’s defensive unit for their start to finish dominance versus the Bulldogs.
“I thought the defense played really well, we needed to see that too,” Buchanan said.
Despite senior running back Jase McClellan out, Aledo’s ground game still enjoyed a 100-plus yard outing, thanks in large part to fellow senior tailback Matthew Tague, who finished with 70 rushing yards on 12 carries.
The Bearcats scored four rushing touchdowns in all, with three coming from junior slotback JoJo Earle.
Buchanan said both Earle and Tague’s contributions in the ground game, especially with McClellan being out, have been of immense benefit.
“With Jase being out for a few weeks, we’re really counting on JoJo to play multiple positions,” Buchanan said.
“Matt’s a really good running back too. He’s very capable.”
Bearcats’ senior quarterback Jake Bishop finished 11-of-19 for 233 yards and a pair of scores.
Aledo senior linebacker Weston Reese paced the team in tackles with 11.
The Bearcats host the Midlothian Panthers in a District 5-5A, D-II game at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Bearcat Stadium.
