The Aledo Lady Cats kicked off tournament play for the 2019 season in Rockwall over the weekend, earning a seventh-place finish in the Battle of the Rock.

Aledo started strong, picking up a 3-0 win (25-18, 25-14 and 25-17) over the Wylie Lady Pirates.

Senior Daleigh Ellison picked up 13 digs while pacing the Lady Cats’ squad in kills with 10.

Fellow senior Riley Pickett collected a team-high 21 digs, while sophomore Mattie Gantt led the team in assists with 34.

The Lady Cats fell to .500 in the tournament after a 3-2 loss (26-24, 23-25, 25-23, 13-25 and 12-15) to McKinney Boyd in the former’s second match of the tournament. 

Ellison led Aledo in kills with 25, while also earning a team-leading 26 digs.

Pickett and fellow senior Alex Grooms each put up 25 digs versus McKinney Boyd.

A 3-0 loss (22-25, 12-25 and 14-25) to Arlington Martin in Aledo’s next match dropped the latter below .500 in the tournament.

Grooms led the black and orange in digs with 15, while Ellison once more paced the team in kills with nine versus the Lady Warriors.

The Lady Cats rebounded following the McKinney Boyd and Arlington Martin matches, closing out their time at the tournament with a 3-0 sweep (25-11, 25-23 and 25-10) of Dallas Lake Highlands.

Ellison, along with junior Hailey Huddleston led Aledo in kills, each collecting 10.

The Lady Cats also racked up 11 aces as a team against the Lady Wildcats.

Aledo plays the Denton Guyer Lady Wildcats in a non-district game at 6 p.m. Tuesday on the road.
