The Brock Lady Eagles wasted no time getting their first win of the 2019 season, sweeping the Fort Worth All Saints Lady Saints, 3-0 in a non-district game Tuesday night at home.
Brock took the first set, 25-18, before putting away All Saints with dominant wins of 25-14 and 25-15 in the second and third sets, respectively.
Lady Eagles’ Head Coach Mallory Daniel said her team did well shaking off some nerves early in the match.
“I feel that we began a little shaky,” Daniel said.
“We had a couple different rotation changes from our scrimmages, but the girls really stepped up and just got better and better with each set.”
Senior Jessie Steele led the Lady Eagles with a team-high eight kills, while fellow senior Kealey Dent paced the team in digs with 17.
Daniel said she took away several notable positives from Tuesday’s match, while adding that the Lady Eagles have plenty of opportunities ahead to shore up any shaky parts of their game.
“I feel like we served really well, and defensively, once we got going, we really showed what we’re capable of,” Daniel said.
“I think our serve receiving can improve from [Tuesday] night. That and just some of the little things. Closing a block every time, covering every hitter. Just technical things we have to improve upon as the season moves forward.”
Still, Daniel said opening the year in the manner Brock did is always a boon for the rest of the year.
“It feels good,” Daniel said.
“It’s always nice to start out with a win, and it always puts a positive note on the beginning of the season.”
The Lady Eagles head to Abilene Friday for the Bev Ball Classic tournament, before playing Holliday on the road at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
