Weatherford High School’s volleyball program is set to host its second annual middle school tournament, the Legacy Land & Title Kickoff Classic, Sept. 14 at Hall Middle School.
The tournament, which is set to host the seventh and eighth grade A teams (16 in all) of Aledo, Decatur, FW McLean, Mineral Wells, Peaster and Stephenville Henderson as well as Weatherford’s own Tison and Hall middle schools, is a great opportunity for local teams to face off in a highly competitive setting, Lady Roos’ Head Coach Nicholas Gay said.
“We started it last year,” Gay said.
“We really just wanted to be able to have all the middle schools in the surrounding areas of Weatherford able to come to a tournament.”
Gay added that the tournament also gives him and his coaching staff a chance to better follow Weatherford’s young volleyball players, as well as provide an opportunity for the high school’s players to get to know some of their potential future teammates.
“I don’t get to go see a lot of the middle school games during the season, just because our season is so long,” Gay said.
“So it gives me an opportunity to see some of our seventh and eighth grade teams at Tison and Hall. That’s a real positive for us.
“Our girls also volunteer to work the court, so they’re able to see some of the future Lady Roos in action, [that’s big] especially for our current freshmen and sophomores who might have some of those girls on their team later on in their high school careers.”
Gay said the support of Legacy Land & Title, which serves the Weatherford, Willow Park and Springtown area and is sponsoring the tournament this year, will allow Weatherford to provide an even greater experience for everyone in attendance.
“We have a middle school sponsor this year, Legacy Land & Title,” Gay said.
They’re in the community. They’re a great company that stepped up to the plate and we’re excited to have them onboard.”
Providing a top-notch experience to the officials and coaches who work the tournament is another priority, Gay said.
As such, Weatherford volleyball is thankful for any possible donations of food or drink items for the competition’s hospitality room, the Lady Roos’ head coach added.
Admission is $5.
